Experiencing Fischer Panda Hybrid Drive Systems  

On 9th May 2013 Fischer Panda invited interested skippers, customers, dealers and representatives of the trade press to their first Hybrid Drive Systems event in the Dutch town of Heerenveen.  

The well-known manufacturer of generators and mobile power systems, who has manufactured electric drives for over 10 years, gave all participants the opportunity to test drives and experience these systems in the harbour.  

Fischer Panda brought five boats, each featuring a different drive system, to Heerenveen which were available for testing.

Three boats were equipped with 48V / 10 kW Pod motors, a fourth with a 50kW / 288V shaft motor and the fifth with two 30 kW / 288V shaft motors.  

The boats in detail: 

48 V Systems Fischer Panda Sloop fitted with a rotatable 10 kW POD motor ("Aziprop motor") featuring Kort nozzle, an electric control ("eMove") and a 10 kW /48 V generator. The sloop is currently the test boat for Fischer Panda’s 48 V systems.  

The eMove is a complete motor mounting with rudder control for 10 kW / 48 V propulsion systems. This allows the Aziprop motor to be rotated through 180 degrees using an electromechanical linear actuator. High operational safeguards are ensured by synchronous operation and a redundant bus communication setup. In an emergency, the system can be manually operated using mechanical switches. The eMove also features an integrated heat exchanger for additional cooling. Another huge advantage of the system is the possibility to adjust from 0 to 10° to compensate for the hull s form (angle from stern). The system can be combined with a second eMove motor and control stand.  

The 48 V Whisperprop Hybrid Drive System can also be equipped with an eMove Autopilot which is suited for motor and sailing yachts. It can also be combined with symmetrical-hydraulic systems. Positioning data received by the GPS module are compared with the rudder’s position. A desired course can automatically be maintained with a single touch on the C3 Cockpit. All information is centrally gathered and seamlessly integrated so that additional displays and switches are no longer required. The actuating arm is driven by a spindle that can deliver a force of up to 600N. This is more than adequate for operating in strong wind conditions.  

A propeller nozzle to prevent a propeller "walk" effect is also optionally available. This also provides more thrust, protects the propeller and improves rudder efficiency.
4-meter California Skiff boat fitted with a 48V / 10 kW Aziprop motor with tractor propeller. The system is powered by a 48V, 100 Ah Li-Ion battery bank. The low weight of the boat in relation to the thrust of the drive enables a high speed and planing of the boat.


5-meter California Skiff boat fitted with a 48V / 10 kW Aziprop drive and Kort nozzle. Power is supplied by an AGM battery bank (140 Ah) and a 6 kW generator as range extender. The generator is equipped with quick release connections so that it can easily be installed or removed when required. The generator is fitted under the table in the cockpit of the boat.     

New 288 V Systems:  

Former waterski boat fitted with a very powerful 50 kW shaft motor and a small 6kW / 288V generator which acts as a range extender and ensures that the boat can return to the harbour even when the batteries are empty. The drive battery is a special feature in use on this boat. It is a high-temperature battery ("Zebra battery") which is mainly used in the commercial sector. This battery provides, at 300 volts, a capacity of 80 Ah and weighs just 210 kg.  

12t Broom 37 - The "flagship" of the Fischer Panda fleet on 09/05/2013 was the “Solagüen” motor yacht - a Broom 37 with a weight of 12 tons. This yacht is fitted with two 30 kW Fischer Panda shaft motors. These are supplied from a 288V battery bank with a capacity of 110 Ah. The yacht has a 36 kW / 288V generator and a 13 kW / 288V generator (both generators work as drive generators and can supply the motors, charge the batteries or both and also ensure onboard power supply). Additionally, the “Solagüen” has a third generator with 10 kW / 230V dedicated for its onboard power supply. The Broom 37 almost provides all the possibilities of the new 288V Hybrid Drive System.


With 20 kW (of 60 kW installed capacity) the Broom 37 reaches a speed of about 12.5 km/h. At full power (60 kW) the boat reaches about 15.5 km/h. That means that three times the power is needed for an increase of 3 km/h from 80% to 100% hull speed, or from a different perspective: 30% of the power is sufficient to achieve 80% of the hull speed  

"Today, our guests can convince themselves of the perfect combination of power and tranquillity on board and they experience the highly dynamic driving properties of the electric motor onboard our boats," said Martin Mews, Head of the Department Diesel-Electric Drive Systems, "This event offers interested boat owners both theory and practice at first hand."  

The new hybrid drive system from Fischer Panda is the third generation of diesel-electric drive systems with a fully integrated power system on board. The heart of this system is the new Fischer Panda C3 cockpit that enables the skipper to monitor everything and to control the power consumption on board.  

The motor control unit also includes an integrated battery charger / inverter for the power supply on board - an additional battery / inverter device is no longer required. The control and converter unit for all typical voltages from 24V DC to 600V DC can be delivered. The performance of this system allows for savings of up to 20 %. By supplying alternating current (AC) from the battery bank, the generator or even both and in some cases two generators the system increases the safety of the boat and its crew significantly. The unit has been designed in such a way that it can be used for the installation of all systems thus reducing the cost factor.  

Command, Control and Communication are the key elements of the new C3 cockpit. All components are connected via a bus system, so that they communicate with each other by sending and receiving signals for further processing. The status, parameters and values of all connected components such as the drive system, control panels, the generator, on-board devices and the batteries are displayed so that the captain has full control. The skipper has full command - he can change parameters and switch devices.

The active battery and alternator management system is integrated. The transmitted data of the components that are connected to the bus system can be accessed and displayed. Remote communication, maintenance and updates are available via a GSM or Ethernet. The system is NMEA 2000 and CAN-bus-compatible. Diagnostic data can be stored on SD cards.  

The Fischer Panda C3 cockpit has been designed as a modular system and can be installed as a standard power system (even without a drive system). All data that are relevant for energy, power and propulsion systems are analysed.  

Several representatives from Fischer Panda GmbH came to Heerenveen. Besides the managing directors Dr. Hans Joachim Herbermann and Stephan Backes, the whole development team as well as staff from sales and customer service were present. Interested customers were able to gain comprehensive information about onboard power. Of course, Fischer Panda also catered for their well-being.  

In view of the great success, another event is being planned for 2014.  

The Broom with 50 kW shaft motor and 6 kW / 288V generator described above is mooring in Glückstadt / Germany at Engels & Kieth until mid-July 2013. It goes without saying that test drives with this and all other Fischer Panda boats can be arranged.
