One of the main concerns about switching to the drive system is whether a battery-based system will be capable to supply enough power for all electrical consumers on board.
Another concern is if they have to maintain two parallel systems - one for powering the drive and one for domestic consumers.
Fischer Panda’s solution is to combine both energy systems into a SINGLE electrical system supplying both drive system and domestic electrical circuit. The drive system’s battery bank and Fischer Panda generator becomes the central power source for BOTH.
The quality of waterways is of great concern for many boat owners. Fischer Panda has had increased enquiries for silent and emission-free electric cruising on canals and rivers.
Power for the drive systems is drawn directly from battery bank as in a
standard electrical drive system. A combi-inverter is used to convert 48 V DC
from the battery bank to 230 V AC to electrical energy for domestic consumers (induction
field cooker, refrigerator, TV etc.) while cruising during the day. At night,
when moored, the shore power connection is used to recharge the battery bank.
Fischer Panda Generator provides power backbone to the system
For customers who may be worried about the availability of recharging infrastructure wherever they are mooring, a Fischer Panda generator can be installed into the system. Power is then available at the flick of a switch wherever the boat is.
Fischer Panda offers a range of different generators depending on the individual power requirements. The choice of generator usually depends on how the electric drive will be used and what main domestic electric consumer will be operated.
If the focus is on the drive system, a DC battery charging generator is recommended. If the focus is on powering domestic consumers, an AC generator is generally better.
Both types of generator allow the additional advantage of cooking electrically so that a gas stove is no longer required (no gas on board!)
Focus on electric drive system: DC battery charging generator
A Fischer Panda AGT (Advanced Generator Technology) battery charging generator can recharge the battery bank directly. These efficient generators can quickly recharge the batteries quieter and faster than any other generator of comparable size and weight.
This allows the system to function as a range extender. When cruising at slower speeds, surplus energy can be used for domestic appliances.
Fischer Panda generators are suited for charging modern lithium battery banks. Lithium battery banks require careful charging but offer an extraordinary energy to weight ratio.
Focus on domestic electrical consumer: 230 V AC generator
Fischer Panda AC generator can supply power directly to the domestic electrical circuit if continuous power for larger consumers such as air conditioning is required.
In case of a weak shore power connection, the inverter can combine it with power from the battery bank.
A variable AC speed generator (iSeries) is especially suited for varying
load profiles. Fixed speed generators
(xSeries) are also available. The battery bank is charged via an inverter. This
setup can also be used to power the electric drive system as a range extender.
Further advantages of the Fischer Panda system
If a generator is being used to keep the battery bank charged, fuel costs drop significantly when cruising electrically at lower speeds. The generator operates within its optimal point. If the battery bank does not need to be charged the generator can be turned off.
The Fischer Panda electric drive system also dramatically reduces annual maintenance costs over standard petrol or diesel engines. Very quiet operation is also a further advantage. The system’s efficiency can also be improved by adding solar and wind energy sources to charge.
Optimized for individual requirements
The final size of the battery bank, type of generator and charging solution will ultimately depend on the drive and domestic power requirements. Fischer Panda often works close with the customer during the planning phase to ensure that energy system meets energy balance requirements.
